Marine Lubricants Sampling

1. Introduction

A key factor in a vessel's efficient running is a sound used lubricant condition monitoring procedure. For the efficiency of the above, following factors are important:
 - Good interpretation of the analysis' results - Regular and systematic representative sampling
- Historical data and trend analysis The used marine lubricant analysis can act as a predictive maintenance tool which is by far the most efficient and cost effective maintenance practise.

 2. Sampling Procedure

 - Sampling should be always performed at the same sampling point
- Preferred sampling location is in the main oil supply line into the engine and after the flow filter
- Sampling should be performed when the engine is running and the oil has reached its operating temperature
- Samples should be taken in the standard sampling bottles, which must be clean, dry and free of any possible contaminants

Do not take samples from low flow points such as sumps, auxiliary pipelines, purifier suction lines and do not sample while the engine is not running

3. Sampling Intervals

The frequency of sampling is important and specific sampling intervals are usually recommended by the entire manufacturer. The results should provide statistically useful information and the regular analyses will indicate any wear trends or the efficiency of the purification system. If the condition of the lubricant is problematic, more frequent sampling should be performed. Normally, used oil samples are taken every three months of service.

 4. Samples Dispatching

All used oil samples should be forwarded to the laboratory at the following address:
